Uriah Heep - London 8/12/11

OK I will kick off the latest run of bootlegs with this one recorded at the Bands "home Venue" the Shepherds Bush Empire in London on the 8th of December 2011 during the " Into the Wild" tour. I must confess I haven't really listened to this one much as I own a copy of the "Concert Live" official bootleg recorded in Wolverhampton from earlier on the same tour. What this bootleg has though is the full set (the Wolverhampton gig had a strict curfew applied which meant they missed a few of the songs off, namely Lady in Black, no loss there, Bird of Prey and the excellent acoustic solo by Mick before The Wizard

From a personal point of view it was nice to see someone in the O2 organisation knew how to spell Heep correctly. It's a shame they didn't tell their colleagues in Glasgow

I was round at a mates house the other day listening to Heep (this would be the same person that i took to see the band on their UK tour in December), The same person who up until 6 months ago thought that the only heep songs in existence were The wizard and easy livin. anyway there i was listening to some great songs when he brought out his vinyl collection of which is not very extensive but for the most part is all classic 70s rock and it is all in excellent condition. Imagine his face when i asked him if he had any "Top of the Pops" albums. Then imagine my face when he produced this one. "Chart-busters 1969" which we know one David Byron contributed some of the vocals to

I have now listened to this several times and there is no doubt in my mind that he provides lead vocals on at LEAST 4 of the tracks

Although for the past nine months I have my own blog dedicated to the Italian progressive rock, the good old Abominogjnr blog remains in my heart. This post is for all fans of the Balletto di Bronzo and especially for Mr. Abominogjnr, which, I remember, really liked the album original YS. A new friend of my blog, Myst, has kindly made the upload of this album, released in 1992, which has an English version of two songs of the YS (the only surviving or perhaps the only recorded). Compared to the same songs on the original, these two versions in English are a bit more hard rock than the same songs in original.

QANGO BIOGRAPHY (from Wikipedia)

"QANGO was a short-lived progressive rock band, a spin-off from Asia. In 1999, an attempt was made at a partial reunion of the progressive rock supergroup Asia involving John WETTON (bass, vocals), Carl PALMER (drums) and Geoff DOWNES (keys), with David KILMINSTER to be on guitar. However, Downes withdrew from plans, choosing to stick with John PAYNE in their Asia line-up. Wetton and Palmer instead formed Qango with Kilminster and John Young on keys (who had briefly replaced Downes in Asia in 1989). The band's live set was based on songs by Asia and Palmer's former band Emerson Lake and Palmer. The band did not attract the same commercial interest as an Asia reunion. Two shows were planned for November 1999, but were cancelled as Wetton required a wrist operation. Instead, the band played five UK dates in February 2000 (including a London show on 4 February when Keith Emerson jammed with the band) and six in April 2000. Subsequent touring plans and ideas to record a studio album were abandoned, with Wetton and Palmer soon returning to their solo activities. The band's second show (3 February 2000) was recorded for a live release, Live in the Hood, the band's only official output"

This post has apparently nothing to do with Uriah Heep, Epitaph is a glorious band from Germany of early seventies. I've downloaded all three albums or only the first, i don't remember, from the wonderful Chrisgoesrock blog, when it wasn't down, and the infos, from Chris, about first album are of some interest for Heep Fans:

"British progressive heavy rock bands like Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Uriah Heep and Led Zeppelin inspired many young bands in Germany. The Germans usually preferred to use English lyrics, and several bands, like Blackwater Park, 2066 & Then and Epitaph, had British vocalists!"
(And, of course, Lucifer's Friend with John Lawton, isn't it? - Note by me)
"Epitaph were founded in Dortmund in 1969, consisting of Cliff Jackson (vocals, guitar), Bernd Kolbe (bass, mellotron, vocals) and Jim McGillivray (drums). The first sessions for their debut album, released 1971 on Polydor, were recorded in an Essex studio in England. For unknown reasons, it was however finished in Windrose Studios, Hamburg, where a fourth member was added to the group: Klaus Walz (guitar, vocals). The five resulting tracks sounded similar to the groups mentioned above, and particularly the earliest incarnation of Uriah Heep. Epitaph's Cliff Jackson didn't attempt to copy Byron's operatic vocal style, though. There were both fast rock'n'roll numbers and slow ballads with mellotron textures, usually in the 'heavy progressive standard song length' - from 5 to 7 minutes"

In my opinion, those are three very good albums of hard prog, with some Heep influences, in particular in the first of the three, that are a joy for the listener. If you like the 70's prog rock and Uriah Heep, and you don't know Epitaph, make to you a gift, download the albums and enjoy....

Lucifer's Friends - 1981 - Mean machine

This is the 1981 album of Lucifer's Friends with the return of John Lawton as lead singer.

After this alnum the band disbanded, even if this is a good hard rock album with some touch of heavy metal (Mean machine/Cool hand killer). Others very good songs are, in my opinion, Hey driver, Born to the city and Bye bye Sadie.

Fuzzy Duck - Fuzzy Duck 1971

An excellent album that was released in 1971 and in many ways much better than a lot of the music that was released that year, yet this Album only had a limited release from their record company (500 copies apparently) and quickly fell into obscurity with the band closely following, which is a real shame as judging by the music on offer here this band could quite easily have gone on to much bigger and better things.

Featuring on Keyboards (predominantly the Hammond organ) one Roy Sharland who previous to his tenure in Fuzzy Duck played keyboards, (albeit briefly and probably as a hired session musician), with a Little known band called Spice

The members of Fuzzy Duck were certainly not novices by the time they banded together and released their only studio album. Bassist Mick Hawksworth had spent the latter sixties with future Atomic Rooster alumnus John Du Cann in the hard-core psych band The Five Day Week Straw People, with both of them later moving on to the semi-legendary psych band Andromeda where they were joined by Fuzzy vocalist/guitarist the late Grahame White. Drummer Paul Francis had played with both The End and Tucky Buzzard. And Roy Sharland had been a member of the pre-Uriah Heep lineup known as Spice. So from that curriculum vitae you would expect a sound that included psych and blues guitar, heavy Hammond organ riffs, and above all very well-structured rhythms. Plus this was recorded in 1970 so throw in poor production, muddy bass notes and unremarkable male vocals straining outside their natural limits.

Well I’m happy to report that the band does not disappoint, as the previous paragraph describes Fuzzy Duck to a ‘T’. Presumably named after the old drinking game of the same name, Fuzzy Duck were a brief flash in the pan that apparently served as little more than a vehicle for the various professionals in it to move on to other things. The band doesn’t seem to have stayed together for more than a year or two, but they clearly had enough in the form of individual reputation and connections to land a record deal on the fledgling but up-and-coming MAM Records label.

But keep in mind that blues-based psych rock with heavy bass, lots of Hammond and strained male vocals were standard fare in 1970, so I’m not sure this really qualifies as progressive music unless we’re assuming just about everything from Canned Heat to Blind Faith qualifies as prog rock. Probably not.

That’s not to say this is a throwaway album though, because there’s some pretty good music on it. It’s just not substantively different from early Uriah Heep, Steppenwolf, Grand Funk, Jody Grind, Wishbone Ash or any of dozens of bands like them. As long as you are okay with that, this is a pretty decent album.

The album kicks off with a heavy bass, lively Hammond rocker titled “Time Will Be Your Doctor”. This is pure hard rock but well played (“Country Boy” later on the album falls into this category as well). And while “Mrs. Prout” is quite similar there is a move toward more psych-leaning guitar and drawn-out keyboards ala Ray Manzarek. After this comes “Just Look around You”, which borders on being a heavy folk tune but is backed with the heavy organ and bass emphasis again.

But then back comes the psych, this time quite heavy and extended thanks to White’s guitar and vocals on “Afternoon Out” and “More Than I Am”. These both sound a bit improvisational and hearken back to the late sixties, showing without a doubt the recent influences of several band members.

The CD reissue (unfortunately not remastered though) includes a handful of singles recorded after White left the band and was briefly replaced by Garth Watt-Roy (Living Daylights, Greatest Show on Earth, East of Eden). The production on these is a bit better, and a couple (“Double Time Woman” and “One More Hour”) were released as singles, presumably with the other two bonus tracks occupying their backsides. These are much lighter on organ, virtually devoid of bass and include horns. The sound is decidedly more AOR than the original album, and I suppose these were only included because the CD version had a lot more whitespace than the original forty minute vinyl version had.

No matter, this is a decent album that is representative of the early seventies heavy rock sound. It’s not too deep in the prog department though, but almost qualifies as proto-prog based on the various musicians’ backgrounds and it’s timing at the very end of the late sixties blues/psych musical era. Three stars and recommended as an interesting curio and as a nostalgic piece, but not as serious prog music

Not quite sure where to start with this.

I have been a Heep fan since 1980 (yes I was the one who bought Conquest), and the title of the blog should give you some indication of what I thought of the next album.

I have eagerly waited for each new release like a child who is only allowed into a sweet shop every birthday, and over the years this feeling has never diminished. Ten years ago I really thought Heep had seen their day as recording artists, and we would never again see another studio album, as they seemed content just releasing live dvd's and touring. Then came Wake the Sleeper which I really thought was a great album, perhaps a bit repetitive in style but it was new Heep and all Heep is good Heep isn't it?.Well yes it is but is it good enough to stand the test of time, personally I don't think so, It was a great "comeback album" and there were a couple of tracks that I still play "What kind of God" and " Book of Lies" being a my favorites,but most of the album just leaves me cold now. so what of this new album? coming so close on the heels of Wake the Sleeper( in Heep terms anyway. 4 years is not bad)

I have had the album now for 6 hours and am on the seventh or eighth play through and it just keeps getting better and better I don't believe there is one weak track on this . Sure some tracks are better than others but even the weakest track is far far superior to anything on the last album. This Sounds like modern Heep but they manage to capture their entire history on this. there are nods to the classic 70s line up as well as moments that could have quite easily have come off of Abominog or even Equator (listen to T- bird Angel and picture Goalby singing that one). In short this is a masterpiece and I only hope that the peers that be give them the recognition this album so deserves

John Lawton Band- 2000- Sympathy- Live On German TV 2000

Originally issued as "The UH live archive number 5", this is a very good audio version of a special for the German Tv with the early John Lawton Band (only one year before, they were Gunhill). The Band is very good and thr John's voice is at the top. The Highlight of this concert, in my opinion, si their version of Free Me, over fourteen minutes long, with a Santana's Jingo citation in the middle and a very beautiful bass solo by Steve Dunning. If you have not this live album, download it and enjoy yourself...

The Uriah Heep Appreciation Society Magazine Collection

There was a time, when the internet was still too young and not so widespread as today, where a fan, to inquire about his heart's band, had to turn to publications like this, fanzines that were sent by air mail from the Fans Club to fans that are mambers of the same Club. For UH fandìs there was the "Uriah Heep Appreciation Society", created by hisortical UH fans David Owen and Alan Hartley (wich is my great gratitude for the work done and, of course, for this post). I was also member for, at least, one couple of years of the UHAS, and i possess the original issues from number 19 to 26. This fanzine came out from 1991 to 1999, when it was rendered useless by the arrival of an internet access in all our homes. Each issue is packed with reviews, informations about the band, reviews of concerts, pictures vintage and new, interviews with the various present and past members of Uriah Heep.

Taken togheter, these 33 issues of the Uriah Heep Appreciation Society Magazine are a real fanzine encyclopedia of Heep (EncyclHEEPedia?).

The ill-fated boy for whom David Garrick became David Byron

This post has apparently nothing to do with Uriah Heep, but the name David Garrick do not remember someone? That's right, the real surname of the great David Byron was right Garrick, then this singer of late 60's was his namesake. But the connection between the two David does not end here. Recently, reading some facts on the beautiful Italian site dedicated to UH (here), i found this curious news:

"The final decision about the name change was made by David because of the success that the Spice were getting in the various clubs and colleges in England, and this decision was a suggestion of Paul Newton's mother (Paul's family was in contact with the band, as the father of Paul was their manager at the time). The problem about the name Garrick was that there was another singer with same name and surname who, at that period, was getting some success with a Rolling Stones cover, Lady Jane. This singer soon disappeared by the scenes, but now the legal procedures for changing the name of our David had ended"

From now, there are not two David Garrick, but was born the only David Byron, when the 70's were still to come with the worldwide success and the excess that all we know...

So David Garrick, now very unknown pop singer of late 60's, was the cause of David Garrick became David Byron (and i'm sure that this name change brought him much luck)

I think that this ill-fated singer, whose parents even more reminescent of the songs, at least deserves a listen, what do you think?

I'm not modest this time... This is the best compilation that i ever made, full of rarities that you can find only here, on the old Abominogjnr Blog. So i expect your comments, people, because i think that this time i've made really a good work... Inside the file, you'll find the cover collage and, in a separate folder, all covers of albums and singles. The only trouble is that some songs are only 128 kbs (the first 4 songs, song 6 and songs from 11 to 13), but the possibility to listen to those rarities make this not a big problem. The rest is in the same insane 320 kbs.

Good listen to all and make some comments please...

PS: I'm still looking for three albums from Jon Petersen & Skyliner of 1976/77 who contains some songs with John Lawton at lead vocals. If some Blog reader knows where i can find them, maybe next times we'll make the number 2 of this compilation... And some other rarities are not present here because i have not them!! Lucifer's Friend II- 1996- Sumogrip

Last album by Lucifer's Friend, it contains new songs and old classic of LF but also a good version of UH's "Free me" (one another).

In America, as you can see in the second cover, this album issued without bonus tracks or old songs and was credited to "John Lawton featuring Lucifer's Friend".

In my personal opinion this is a good album, the voice of Mr. Lawton is good as ever and the music too (even if in some songs personally i don't like those electronic keyboards... but this is a personal opinion). Good hard rock songs but also some pop songs and some good ballads,

for an album very "full" of songs (17!)

Second effort by original Lucifer's Friend. Even if, from first track, you think to listen to the same good old LF's hard rock (Hobo- Prince of darkness). In reality, on this album, Lucifer's Friend pushes their sound more in progressive rock direction than in their first "Lucifer's friend" (Rose on the vine, Mother and the fantastic Summerdream, with many change of times and contrasts). So guitar riffs and organ are present, but also one piano, that in some songs is prominent on other struments.

I love this classic album, for me one of the better in the LF career

John Wetton- 1980- Caught in the Crossfire

This Cover is a collage made by me with five covers of different editions of this very good album, personally my favourite in the Wetton's solo discography (but in the file you'll find all five versions of the cover, so you can choose what cover you want).

Very good album, in some case quite hard rock if compared to Asia's sound of only two years later (i think that, for exemple, Paper Talk could be , for me, a perfect song for Uriah Heep during their Goalby era, and the same is for the song after, Get Away). But all vocal harmonies in this album remind to me the Good Old UH (probably is a mental problem of mine).

Another album relatd to Lucifer's Friend (In how much albums did play LF members in early seventies- Asterix, Pink Mice, Electric Food, Brother T & Family, LF of course. But singular members are invoved in some other project, all from 70 to 72). Brother T & Family includes all original members of Lucifer's Friend, except John Lawton. Their music seems to be an hard blues rock with a melodic touch.

About Italian prog masterworks

Dear friends, this is a message by me to all lovers of Italian progressive rock: i have opened a new blog where, in my intentions, i will post some or all the italian prog rock albums that i did collect in the last 20 years, with a logic increase in the internet era... So my posts here will be only albums or bootlegs of UH and related (even if their number is not more very large, after all posts in this blog). For this reason the Italian prog masterworks serie ends on Abominogjnr blog with number 7. In my new blog, finally i will write in italian, my language, because for me some times is very fatiguant find the words in english to write what i want to say, and i think that 90% of people interested in this genre of music are Italian people. With a big thank you to vivalesbootlegs blogspot.com, i post this double bootleg as hommage to Mister Gary Moore, who sadly has died last sunday. Even if i wasn't a big fan of him, i know that he was a big musician, with a big dose of chemistry and personality, who made him one of the best guitar player of the world. Definitively, a monster in blues rock.

R.I.P. Gary, and thank you for your work... As when dies Ronnie James Dio, the world is more sad without you.

Another fondamental Lucifer's Friends related Band, Electric Food made those two albums in 1970 and 71. As in the Pink Mice albums, Peter Hesslein, Peter Hecht and Dieter Horns of Lucifer's Friend are involved in this couple of rock albums, compiled in one cd with 19 originals (all compositions of Peter Hesslein) and 5 covers of Led Zep, Free, Beatles and others.

Maxophone, who made only one wonderful album, a cult disc for the Italian Prog maniacs, was one of the few Italian groups of the 1970s that managed to record an English version of their album, altough honestly the English- language recording wasn't a great success.

"Maxophone had a twin-fold soul: half of the members had classical music background while the other half had a solid rock background. This weird combination appears clarly in some songs were very non-rock instruments, such a horn, clarinet, trumpet and vibraphone are used in very balanced way together with Fripp-esque guitars and electrical piano. In 1975 Maxophone issued their only lp record wich aged very well, sounding fresh today as 30 years ago."

To be an audience registration of 38 years ago, the quality is good, very listenable and enjoiable for every Heepster. If you like this piece of history, please, leave a comment for these bloggers.

"1971 hard psych with swinging London exploitation moves, loud, acidy leads, echoing vocals and catchy tunes, originally released on the Decca label.

A thrilling, no holds barred, heavy rock treatment of a clutch of riff-based but fairly commercial pop tunes, Megaton's sole album has plenty of admirers these days.

Megaton was the creative inspiration of Les Humpries (of the Les Humpries Singers, big hit makers in early 70's Germany) and his writing partner/right hand LHS man, Jimmy Bilsbury.

Perhaps having the likes of future Uriah Heep vocalist John Lawton in the misdt of the LHS was an inspiration, but whatever, Humpries nose for a commercial opportunity sniffed out The Free, Led Zep hard rock/blues rock market and he duly delivered. The first is too the only from Goalby era (Equator tour, i think), because the other three are from Byron era and i will post them on the blog in the next times. This is too the better of the four as sound quality, even if is an audience record

The Pink Mice- 1971-72- "In Action" and "In Synthesizer sound"

Pink Mice are a Lucifer's Friend collateral project (in that years were numerous albums recorded by LF's musicians, some time with pseudonyms: Flash, Pink Mice, Children of Quechua, Electric Food and probably some others more).

Those two albums features Peter Hecht, Dieter Horns and Peter Hesslein of Lucifer's Friend and are a collection of pop- rock versions of classical compositions from the best authors of the world.

Early 70's German progressive acid band which had 2 albums 'Revelation' and 'Thoughts' on the Pilz label. These live recordings were made for WDR radio in1973. With lots of wild guitar, keyboard, and even sax solos over loose improvisations.

To avoid any confusion, this is the short-lived German band that released just two other LP's during their brief existence: 'Revelation' (early '71)and 'Thoughts' (late '71). Though they've been often tagged as a krautrock band, Virus is actually a hard rock/psych '70's ensemble that's from the Bielefeld/Westphalia area. 'Remember' was recorded at a live shindig in Koln on April 28, 1973 for WDR Radio show. The sound quality is like a 9.5, really nice. It appears that all but one of the nine tracks here are exclusive to this CD. Personally, I like it when bands like this play unreleased songs, that is if they're good. In the case of 'Remember', I doubt any fan of this genre would be disappointed. The first several tunes, "Everybody Knows That I've Got That Feeling", "This Is No Anarchy", the title cut "Remember" and "In Any Way", are basically high energy, very well played rock&roll. Some of the vocals sort of remind of, say maybe early Traffic, and the guitar of perhaps Ten Years After. "Rock 'N' Roll" is a very good bluesy rock number. I had listened to this release several times in a two day period as I noticed that the remainder of the disc "Settle Down", "Living In The Country", "King Heroin" and the ten minute instrumental "Woods Fun", had fully managed to keep up the pace. Great guitar and sax playing through most of the CD, with a total running time of 49:53. This disc would've made a great soundtrack for one of the 'Fritz The Cat' movies; you know, during the scene(s) where he's all flopped out in a garbage can after he gets like totally trashed. I believe the group had gone through a couple of personnel changes.

for those of you who don't know or simply don't care, the reason I was after this particular bootleg is because this show was the first time I got to hear my boyhood hero's for the first time. It was broadcast on Mad Sunday by radio Luxembourg during the Isle of Man TT festival (ironically where I now live)on the 6th of June 1982 and was 2 days before I actually went to my first Heep gig in Edinburgh on the 8th I still have the T shirt and baseball shirt from the tour

Following the departure of founder member Martin Turner, the remaining members of Wishbone Ash invited respected British bassist/vocalist John Wetton (UK, King Crimson, Roxy Music, Family, Uriah Heep) to join them for the recording of Number the Brave. On paper, this union promised great things. The end result, however, would prove somewhat disappointing in the eyes of many fans - and indeed the band’s new recruit.

Recording for Number the Brave took place during the latter part of 1980 at Criteria Sound Studios in Miami - the scene of many previous Wishbone Ash recording sessions. Additional recording would take place at Surrey Sound in England. Nigel Gray, who had played an enormous part in helping shape the Police’s studio sound, was recruited as producer, while Claire Hamill was invited to contribute backing vocals to the album, following the success of her contribution to Just Testing.

However, it soon became clear that John Wetton was not going to be a direct replacement for Martin Turner. Wetton believed he was joining the band to take over Martin’s duties of bassist and lead vocalist, yet this would not prove to be the reality. Although John Wetton offered several songs to the band, most of these would be rejected as unsuitable for the band’s style. Meanwhile, Wetton was frustrated by Andy Powell and Laurie Wisefield’s decision to take the majority of the lead vocals. In retrospect, the lack of input from John Wetton was, perhaps, detrimental to the overall content of the album. As John says, “I think if I had been allowed to write and sing to the fullest extent of my capabilities, it would have been a really good album. I got the impression they didn’t want anyone to take over from where Martin had left off.”

“Loaded” opened the album and set the blueprint for much of the album, which had a funkier feel than previous Wishbone Ash offerings. “Where is the Love” came next - a workmanlike boogie number. There then followed one of the albums true highlights, the anti-nuclear message “Underground”, which featured some fine guitar picking from Andy Powell, whose lead vocal blended effectively with Claire Hamill’s voice. “Kicks on the Street” was largely forgettable hard rock, while “Open Road” was perhaps the band’s msot successful venture into funk-rock territory.

“Get Ready” was a cover of the Smokey Robinson hit and, although not fairing too well with the bands purist fans, was a more than adaquate cover and a valid - if commercially unsuccessful - attempt at singles success. “That’s That” was John Wetton’s sole songwriting and lead vocal contribution to the album, while “Rainstorm” and “Rollercoaster” both featured Laurie Wisefield on lead vocal. The latter was fairly forgettable funk-rock, but “Rainstorm” had a strong melody, though was marred by Laurie’s weak vocal work. Album closer “Number the Brave” was another of this albums triumphs, perfectly mixing the Ash sound of old with a modern sound and direction for the eighties.

Number the Brave peaked at No.61 on the UK chart and would be the band’s final MCA album. Before the album’s release John Wetton and Wishbone Ash had parted company, Wetton going on to achieve enormous success with Asia, establishing himself as one of the UK’s most distinctive rock vocalists, while Wishbone recruited former Uriah Heep/David Bowie bassist Trevor Bolder to perform on the Number the Brave tour

Plastic Penny originally came together in the summer of 1967 when ex-Universals members vocalist Brian Keith, organist Paul Raymond and bassist Tony Murray decided to form a new band with guitarist Mick Grabham and drummer Nigel Olsson. The Universals had released two singles on producer Larry Page's Page One Records ("I Can't Find You" and "Green Veined Orchard") before disbanding and so it was to Mr. Page that the newly named Plastic Penny turned to form a contract. The band's debut single was "Everything I Am"/"No Pleasure Without Pain" (POF 051). Released in December 1967, the A-side was a cover of a song originally released by The Box Tops and Plastic Penny took it straight into the UK top ten, reaching No.6 and spending ten weeks in the charts. However, the follow-up single "Nobody Knows" (written by Bill Martin and Phil Coulter)/"Just Happy To Be With You" (POF 052) failed to chart and the various members began to indulge in other activities. Vocalist Brian Keith already had a lot of session experience and he left in mid-1968, later turning up in Congregation, Big Balls and The Great White Idiot and Screaming Lord Sutch amongst others.

The remaining members soldiered on, with Raymond taking on vocal duties. In mid-1968, they released the album "Two Sides Of A Penny" (POL 005) and followed it with the single "Your Way To Tell Me To Go"/"Baby You're Not To Blame" (POF 079). November 1968 saw a cover of Leiber/Stoller's "Hound Dog"/"Currency" (POF 107) followed by "She Does"/"Genevieve" (POF 146) in mid-1969 by which time the group existed only in name as the various members decided to go their separate ways.

Tony Murray joined The Troggs and also contributed bass to Elton John's "Empty Sky" album. Paul Raymond joined Chicken Shack for two years and then played with Savoy Brown between 1971-76; heavy metal band UFO was his next step between 1977-79, and he was also a member of the Michael Schenker Group. Mick Graham formed Cochise with Rick Willis, released a solo LP "Mick The Ladd" in 1972, and was a member of Procol Harum between 1973-77. Since then he's been an in-demand session guitarist working with the likes of Bandit, The Dukes, Yvonne Elliman, Dave Greenslade and Micky Jupp amongst others. Nigel Olsson’s post Plastic Penny career reads like an A-Z of Rock! He provided the drums for Uriah Heep's debut LP "Very 'Eavy Very, 'Umble" and then worked with Elton John on a permanent basis between 1969-74. He also released five solo albums ("Drum Orchestra", "Nigel Olsson", "Drummers Can Sing Too", "Changing Tides" and "Nigel") and has worked with the likes of Eric Carmen, Spencer Davis, Kiki Dee, Randy Edelman, Linda Ronstadt, and the Who to name but a few. History may remember Plastic Penny as 'one hit wonders' but there's no doubting the excellent musicians training ground it provided!

If i'm not in error (remember: i'm Italian), at the beginning of song 2, when people said "Uriah Heep" for another time, you can hear Bolan that rename our band Uriah Shit... People, also about this your comments are wellcome....

I post this album of solid rock'n'blues because the presence of Mr. Colin Wood, original keyboard player of "Come away Melinda" and "Wake up (set your sights)" in the first glorious Heep album, Veri eavy, very umble.

Colin Wood (born 15 June 1943) is a British musician engaged in the field of jazz and rock music. Wood was born in London and was moved to Somerset in 1950. He played jazz piano whilw still at school. In 1962 he went to Durham University to study mathematics. In 1965 he moved to London to play with Bill Nile's Deta Jazz Band and with Monty Sunshine (1968). He was also playing on rock sessions with the Yardbirds, David Bowie, Cat Stevens, Kevin Coyne and was the keyboardist on two songs included as part of the Uriah Heep's debut album. Wood, whose other musicl talents also include playing the flute, did not, however (although offered the job), become an official member of the band. He lectured in maths for a time while freelancing musically. In September 1977 he joined Acker Bilk and remained with him into the 2000s.

Joshua Perahia (pronounced Pûr-i-yä) is pioneer in Christian rock. Before there was a Stryper, before Barren Cross appeared on the scene, there stood alone one band, and that was JOSHUA. Through his faith and desire to share his love of God, Joshua made it his life's mission to realize his musical vision and JOSHUA was born. The original line-up of JOSHUA, featuring vocalist Stephen Fontaine, was assembled in Los Angeles and in short time took the Sunset Strip by storm. Show-after-show were sell-outs at all the top venues in town. Bands like Great White, Ratt and other future successful metal bands were opening up for JOSHUA. The band's debut album "The Hand is Quicker Than the Eye" on Enigma Records was released in 1982 and spawned the Los Angeles Radio hit "November is Going Away". Metal radio stations across the country were adding the epic classic. To say the album caught on in Japan would be a understatement. "November is Going Away" went all the way to the top as a NUMBER 1 HIT! The band's exposure in Japan also caught the eye of the Japanese Music press. Burrn! Magazine, the 1 rock magazine in Japan, hailed the band's debut album and in BOLD PRINT declared Joshua "The World's Fastest Guitarist." Metal press around the globe followed suit, complimenting Joshua for his note-for-note perfect guitar virtuosity. Joshua was even voted Kerrang Magazine's "Guitarist of the Year" in 1982. radio stations across the country were adding the epic classic.

This is the only JOSHUA album to feature the outstanding vocals of Stephen ["Steff"] Fontaine! One of the few albums to feature Fontaine, as he would later go on to work with URIAH HEEP, Eddie St James, and in more recent years sang on the lone HEARTACHE CITY disc. Gems such as "Falling Again", "Sweet Lil' Hurricane" and "Broken Dream" are evidence that this was a killer debut, and a shame it was never followed up by this line-up.

Steff fontaine was Singer in Heep for a very brief period of time early 1986. Between Pete Goalby who quitted after the Equator 1985 album and Bernie Shaw who joined the band autumn 1986, Steff did a USA tour with Heep. His early departure according to Mick Box had to do with Steff being not diciplined enough for a professional rockband as Heep. Mick Box :" And then came LA vocalist Stef Fontaine. "He was desperately bad," says Mick. "I couldn't believe anyone could be so unprofessional. He had a great voice but his discipline was something else.

Le Orme were one such band. On this album, the lyrics throughout are provided by Peter Hammill (VDGG and solo). His words are based on a concept which originated within the band, relating to two contrasting planets which have no knowledge of each other. Felona is a happy planet whose people are sustained by "soap balls" falling from the sky. Their houses are spherical mobile homes which bounce through the countryside "like elastic whales".

Sorona on the other hand is a depressive place which is waiting for a miracle. When this conveniently comes along, the planets co- exist in harmony only briefly before the change in the equilibrium bring with it disaster to both planets. The lyrics actually tell a slightly different story to the summary on the album sleeve, but you get the picture.

OK, nice imaginative story, how about the music? There is a definite neo-prog feel throughout this album, indeed this could be the missing link from symphonic prog to neo. Considering the trio who make up the band use a sparse array of instrumentation consisting only of keyboards, guitars and drums, the sound is lush and melodic. Indeed the melodies provide the underlying strength for the album, which has a generally soft feel. There are no aggressive guitar solos or manic synthesiser runs, the album being based on symphonic influences as much as it is in rock.

There are no tracks which stand apart from the others here, with the possible exception of "The balance" which is commercial enough to have been a potential single. The album really demands to be heard as a whole though, something most listeners should be able to accomplish easily given the albums meagre running time.

Musically this German band plays a good hard rock, a little in the NWOBHM vein but not so much. But the reason for this post is one other: i don't know how, but in some way Mister Phil Lanzon was a member of this band, probably only as song writer (in the back cover of this mini cd, you can read: "Music and lyrics: Robin McCauley, Phil Lanzon & Mike Dounoughue except FALL IN LINE: Robin McCauley, Phil Lanzon, Mike Dounoughue & Ralph Hood").
So, even if Phil doesn't play on this work, all songs are co-written by him. Maybe someone out there knows something about the role of Phil in this album: if so, please make a comment...
The year is another problem: for some, this album is issued in 1985 (Wikipedia), for some other this is a 1991 album... Come on people, let me know some thing about this album...

In this album, Nigel is also lead vocalist on two songs: Hound dog and Celebrity ball*, respectively tracks 2 and 11.

Plastic Penny were an unremarkable late-'60s British group who made the U.K. Top Ten in early 1968 with "Everything I Am," a labored ballad augmented by strings, that wasn't even one of their best songs. Much of their material was psychedelic pop with hints of encroaching prog-rock, sometimes recalling the Who a bit, elsewhere going into more fey story-songs. Their guitarist, Mick Grabham, would play with Procol Harum for a few years in the 1970s.

Plastic Penny's second album offers various shades of British psychedelic pop that aren't near either the top or bottom of the class. It left the impression of a group who were good musicians, but not ones who had exceptional material or a markedly identifiable style. Beatlesque psychedelic pop that was lighter than the Beatles was the main ingredient, perhaps with elements of the Bee Gees and the poppiest facet of the Who as well, though there was more organ involved in Plastic Penny's arrangements than there was in those of any of these other groups. Sometimes the keyboard-driven sound had shades of Procol Harum and Traffic. It's respectable listening, but not a record to win commendations for originality; "Give Me Money" in particular is a shameless imitation of the Who and the Move in their circa 1967 power pop days, albeit a pretty good one. The inclusion of a couple instrumentals (the closing "Sour Suite," lasting eight minutes, and "Currency") with a heavier, more improvised-sounding organ-grounded approach, as well as mediocre covers of "Hound Dog" and "MacArthur Park," raises the suspicion that the group really didn't have enough material ready to make an album, even though those instrumentals aren't bad. Serious Elton John fans, however, will be interested in collecting this record for the presence of an early Elton John-Bernie Taupin composition, "Turn to Me," that Elton John never recorded. The way Plastic Penny do it, it sounds like an early Badfinger track. (AMG).

Uriah Heep - The London Classic Rock Festival 2002 Acoustic Set (repost)

When I first received this bootleg there was some confusion, on my part anyway, It was tagged as 'Heep live acoustic set at the Magicians' Birthday party 2003' Which I immediately questioned as I was at that show and the acoustic part was only four songs long and performed in the middle of the set, so that meant it had to be from 2002 when Heep played two different sets over two nights as part of the Classic Rock Productions Classic Rock Festival in London (I was at both shows) or was it from the US shows?. Well the big give away for me is obviously Bernie saying goodbye to London at the end of the show. I also did a search on the Internet for heep bootleg artwork and came up with this

Now far for me to contradict someone else's hard work but I cannot see how Heep could possibly have played this venue, on this night, as they were several miles up the road at the Shepherds Bush Empire I may have had a few drinks that evening but I think I should know which venue I was at(also some one somewhere has written that the mean fiddler is just another name for the Astoria, again not true although they are part of the same building they are different venues)

This was a trully memorable weekend for me with not only Heep on the bill (Twice) but also John Lawton, Focus and Asia amongst others The whole weekend was centered around the Heep Festival Club see below

Day 1
As well as purchasing my copy of Dave Ling's excellent book Wizards and Demons I also managed to get it signed by Dave himself and both Mick and Trevor who were present at the festival club and also by Phil who I quite literally bumped into an hour or so before the show on Shepards Bush Green. Focus were on before Heep this evening and bloody brilliant they were too

Day 2

Now this day turned out to be really memorable having failed miserably at the 'Ultimate Heep Fan Quiz' the previous day I was determined to enjoy myself and what better way to do that than by splashing out at the auction

I wasn't particularly bothered which lot I won, I was just determined to win one, and so with a lot of conservative bidding going on at the start, I picked up the signed John lawton gig shirt for the princly sum of twenty quid (This shirt has since been framed and is hanging on my wall as I wright this). I was happy with my purchase and as I went to collect it I was offered several different ways of paying for it (I had just assumed it would be cash only and I didn't have too much on me) Well when I saw a credit card option my eyes just lit up and I went running back to the auction to see what else I could pick up and i had my sights set on lot 11 which after some fierce bidding that consisted of me just standing there with my hand up until everyone else had given up I won and that too is hanging on my wall right next to Lawtons shirt. I had about an hour or so to kill between the Heep club and the gig so it was of back to the hotel to store my purchases and then back to the venue for the gig

Uriah Heep opened this evening with the acoustic set wich i am not going to review as you can hear it for yourself and make you own judgments.

Asia were the main act of the evening and unfortunately I only managed to catch the first 2 or 3 songs as i had been made aware of the fact Lee Kerslake was in the bar (I was upstairs in the seated area) so I took that opportunity to meet him and spent the best part of asia's set drinking with one of my boyhood hero's

It just doesn't get better than that

I have had this single since I picked it up in a bargain bin shortly after its release for the princely sum of 10p its been played to death over the years as I really like it especially the beautiful Instrumental Danielle. I have tried in vain to get digital versions of these songs but they simply don't exist even the official Wakeman site lists the single but that's it, there is no other info available and they have never found their way onto any album or CD enjoy

Uriah Heep is trekking across the USA for the first time in nearly a decade. Added to their arsenal of hits are several new songs from their latest releases Wake the Sleeper and Celebration. The band are smart enough to base their set on the classics, yet savvy and proud enough to sprinkle in the new material. Heep, never forgetting their hardcore fan base, also throws in a few album cuts from yesteryear as well.

Band founder, and leader, Mick Box began the show with the intense title track from their critically acclaimed Wake the Sleeper album. Mick hit the wah-wah pedal like a madman driving a four-wheel drive up the Rockies. Next up was the classic Heep tune “Return to Fantasy.” Shaw is the lead singer for the band, not simply a replacement for the late David Byron. He deserves much more credit than he receives for both his vocal contributions and his ability to work a crowd. Imagining Uriah Heep without Shaw seems impossible. This says heaps [pun intended] about his abilities and personality.

Bass player Trevor Bolder plays the low-end four string like a lead guitarist. His contributions are essential to the bands’ sound. Keyboard player Phil Lanzon, on the other hand, is front and center to the Heep sound. He handles the pressure of replacing founding member, and rock icon, Ken Hensley with ease. Speaking of tough people to replace, drummer Russell Gilbrook has the daunting task of filling the drum seat of one of Heep’s most beloved members, Lee Kerslake. Russell goes about his business as if he has been playing with the band for decades. He brings a fresh energy to the band that is thrust onto the audience whether they want it or not.

The bands' newest release, Celebration, sees the band celebrating their 4th decade by re-recording their classics plus two new tracks, “Only Human” and “Corridors of Madness,” both of which fit in well with the older tunes. The classic “Bird of Prey” was sandwiched in between a couple of new tunes and led to a standing ovation from the Heep hungry crowd. Shaw did not have to coax the attendance to sing the “oohs” and “ahhs” to the classic “Stealin’.” This song stands the test of time and, like a fine wine, gets better with age.

The epic “Love in Silence” represented Sea of Light, an album highly praised by fans. After the song only Lanzon and Shaw remained on stage. They duo performed a touching rendition of the classic “Rain” from The Magician’s Birthday. The crowd was in awe of this unexpected performance. Between the last note of the song, and the applause, one could clearly hear a fan up front simply say “thank you,” a fitting response to a poignant song. “The Wizard” and “Sunrise” followed and were the pinnacle of the show. Both songs were performed with mastery and left all in attendance with jaws agape.

Heep not only kept the momentum going, they shifted the entire evening into overdrive with “Gypsy,” “July Morning” and “Easy Livin’” all being performed to end the show. Between “Gypsy” and “July Morning” was a song from Wake the Sleeper written by bassist Trevor Bolder titled “Angels Walk With You.” This may be the best Uriah Heep track written in the last twenty years. The band left the stage after “Easy Livin’” but returned with Box adorning his acoustic guitar. The crowd joined in for the chorus of “Lady In Black.” Shaw even warned the crowd when the high note was coming so they could be sure to hit it.

At the end of the day, Uriah Heep not only performed well, they enjoyed each other and the audience. The best thing one can say about Uriah Heep is that they are a true band. Their fans are simply a part of their extended family. After the show they met with all who wanted to stand in line and signed autographs and posed for pictures for two hours, even though they had not yet eaten dinner.

One can only hope it does not take them nine more years to do the next USA tour. This writer, for one, simply can’t wait that long. Long live Heep!

Miller Anderson has been on the cutting-edge of rock for more than three decades. Although he's only released two solo albums -- Bright City in 1971 and Celtic Moon in 1988 -- the Scotland-born guitarist and vocalist has been involved with many influential musicians. Since cutting his musical teeth in bands with Ian Hunter (pre-Mott the Hoople) and Bill Bruford (pre-King Crimson and Yes), Anderson has been a member of such bands as the Keef Hartley Band, Savoy Brown, T. Rex, Mountain, the Spencer Davis Group, and in groups led by Yes vocalist Jon Lord and folk-rock balladeer Donovan. Anderson launched his career with the Royal Crests in 1964, continuing to play with the group as they evolved into Karl Stuart & the Profiles. Although he recorded one single with the Voice, "Train to Disaster" b/w "Truth," he left the band soon afterwards and was replaced by Mick Ronson. After meeting Ian Hunter during recording sessions at Regent Sound Studios, Anderson and Hunter formed a band, the Scenery, with drummer John Verson Smith. The group, which enlarged into a quartet with the addition of keyboardist Dante Smith, released an EP in Japan. In 1967, the group became the backup band for pianist/vocalist Freddie "Fingers" Lee as the Freddie "Fingers" Lee Band. While Anderson temporarily left the group to join the Paper Blitz Tissue, where he met Bill Bruford who replaced drummer Dave Dufort, he rejoined Hunter and Lee in March 1968 to form the oddly named group At Last the 1958 Rock 'n' Roll Show. After recording one single, "I Can't Drive" b/w "Workin' on the Railroad," the band changed their name to Charlie Woolfe. Upon leaving this group, Anderson and Hunter temporarily resurrected the Scenery. In late 1968, Anderson joined the Keef Hartley Band. Although they had begun to work on their debut album, the group had changed their lead singer twice before Anderson was recruited. In addition to playing with them at the Woodstock Festival in August 1969, Anderson recorded five albums with the band -- Halfbreed, The Battle of North West, The Time Is Near, Overdrive, and the live album Little Big Band. Leaving the group to start his solo career, Anderson formed the Miller Anderson Band.

Miller Anderson issued his sole solo album, "Bright City" in 1971, featuring songs that were not considered suitable for Hartley's repertoire. Lineup featured among others Mick Weaver on keyboards plus the bassist (Gary Thain) and reed players of Hartley's. Plus a string section. Pretty melodies, acoustic guitars, fluegel horn & flute - no doubt mirroring Miller's interest in a softer, more acoustic brand of music.
But "High Tide, High Water" and "Nothing In This World" were something else: two riffing electric guitars (the other deftly handled by Neil Hubbard), wah-wah, and a fat, forceful organ. Extended workouts - true timepieces.

Ok this is a bit of a cheat, for a start the whole show is not represented here and the songs have all been taken from different sources and stapled together into the running order of the album. The notable absentees are Circle of Hands and Rainbow Demon which to this date have not surfaced anywhere. As these tracks have come from different sources the quality varies quite significantly from track to track but a definite highlight is Paradise/The Spell which was recorded from two seperate you tube posts(See below) and spliced together a great song and Mick Moody plays his part superbly

But wait, what is this on the Prog stage? Ah, it’s Uriah Heep, playing the whole of their 1972 album Demons And Wizards, and doing it with such panache and style, it’s almost as if it’s only just been written. The introduction of Micky Moody on slide guitar is an inspiration, and the crowd is so vast, it’s overspilling into the Helter Skelter area.

Horrible!!! A dirty old punk demenzial offensive album on this blog!!!

But there are some reasons for this, the first is that they played a rude punk'n'roll in a perfect and very enjoying way.
For the second reason, and to understand why this album is here and if is connected with others posts on this blog, read the band history, also to know how strange is rock'n'roll world. The question is: from where came the identical twins named Vilos Styles, front man of the band, and Horendus Styles, lead guitar man of the same rotten band?

The true identities of the Pork Dukes were originally a closely-guarded secret, the band playing in pig masks during live performances. Various rumours circulated amongst fans and in the music press that the band was actually Led Zeppelin, Steeleye Span, The Rezillos, Fairport Convention or Tenpole Tudor in disguise. It was also suggested that either Keith Moon or Dudley Moore may have been lead singer.

In reality, the band was originally composed of twin brothers and former Gnidrolog members Colin Goldring (vocals / guitar) and Stewart Goldring (guitar / vocals) using the pseudonyms Vilos and Horrendus Styles, respectively – alongside Scabs (bass guitar), Germun LePig (drums) (later replaced by Bonk aka. Rocky Rhythm) and Mack E. Valley (keyboards. He was later replaced by Guardian Angel prior partway through the recording sessions for the second album.

Combining a Buzzcocks-style pop punk sound with bawdy subject matter, gross-out toilet humour and profanity in their songs, the band released their debut single "Bend and Flush" b/w "Throbbing Gristle" in 1977 on Wood Records, a subsidiary of Caroline Records UK created specifically for the band.

Due to the lyrical content of their recordings, the band struggled for airplay, though it was known that BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel was a fan.

The controversy surrounding the band and backlash from feminist groups led to them being unable to find a management company to represent them or perform at large venues (gigs were frequently played unannounced at small community centres to avoid protesters). Towards the end the band were reduced to playing gigs at mental institutions (Vilos Styles was training to become a psychiatric nurse at this point) to entertain the patients.

Following the release of the studio Pink Pork and three singles on Wood Records, the band broke up in 1979, with the album Pig Out of Hell being released posthumously by Wood in either between 1979-1981. Bonk (aka. Rocky Rhythm) later played for The Revillos, Tenpole Tudor and The Damned frontman Dave Vanian's Phantom Chords.

In 2001 the Pork Dukes reformed. Returning to the band on drums was Bonk (aka. Rocky Rhythm) and new member Vince Santini (ex-The Revillos) on bass guitar / vocals, who replaced Scabs. They continue to record and tour.

Legends of the Killed By Death scene for many years, The Pork Dukes were a blatant example of poor taste and gross humor. Formed in 1977, the band was a total mystery. Playing live in pig masks, the band was rumoured to be members of Led Zeppelin, Keith Moon, and even Dudley Moore. Even more mysteriously, is how the band managed to keep everything at a quite level and make it past bans and legal action. Now reformed, they continue to tour and record material.

BRIEF BAND BIOGRAPHIES (Pork Dukes 2010)

Identical twins Vilos Styles, vocals/guitar and Horendus Styles, lead guitar have worked together since their youth. They appeared in the stage musical Oliver! in London’s west end in 1973, then formed the respected progressive rock band Gnidrolog, releasing two critically acclaimed albums on RCA. They recorded a single with Leiber & Stoller, the writing team who wrote some of Elvis Presley’s biggest hits. As actors they appeared in the classic 1970s TV show Hi-De-Hi, before forming The Pork Dukes as a mystery punk band in 1976, with drummer Bonk.

Bonk, drums: Bonk is the Pork Dukes’ original drummer. He quit the Dukes in 1979. Then under the stage name Rocky Rhythm, he helped form successful Scottish pop combo The Revillos, appearing a number of times on Top Of The Pops. More recently he played drums for Damned singer David Vanian’s band The Phantom Chords, Tenpole Tudor and many other name bands and singers. The low point of his career was headlining the London Palladium – with an Elvis impersonator…

Vince Santini, bass: Vince is an old cohort of Bonk since his days touring the world as bassist with The Revillos in the 1980s. Doubling as an actor and singer, he has appeared in Shakespeare plays, operas, musicals, church choirs - and now the Pork Dukes. Clearly a natural progression...

This bootleg is from a little and unknown italian label, Microphone records, and is the only known live registration from Tempest. I don't know what is the original source, surely this is not a bootleg from an audience old tape because the sound quality is very good.

Original inner sleeve notes of cd:

Tempest form the brief "rock parenthesis" in the career of mythical drummer John Hiseman, reached at the height of his popularity between 68 and 71with Colosseum, after a series of performances in the English blues most well known formations (Graham Bond and John Mayall to name the better known).

The band made two LP's (Tempest and Living in fear) cut between 73 - 74, during wich the group formation underwent several changes (immediately prior the second album, lost the vocalist Paul Wiulliams - ex Juicy Lucy - and the prestigious guitarist Allan Holdsworth, who was substituted by another English big name of the six cordes, Ollie Halsall - ex Patto). Bass player Mark Clarke who, togheter with Hiseman, came from the split Colosseum group, completes the rhythm section of the band and also takes the solo voice part in the second LP.

This recorded concert magically portrays the transition period between the two albums, and gives us a true sound "scoop": the simultaneous presence of all members mentioned: a real "jewel" for guitar lovers, who are able to listen to the mythicall Allan Holdsworth challenging the first rate Ollie Halsall to a "duel" in this unusual rock contest.

John Sloman and (Gary Moore?) - The Demos

This collection of demos was originally titled Gary Moore the John Sloman demos and came with a cover featuring Gary Moore on the front so I thought I would rectify that as all these songs are written by John with the vast majority finding there way on to his first solo effort "Disappearances Can Be Deceptive..." There is also a version of "Inside Out" which had already surfaced as Uriah Heep's "My Joanna Needs Tuning (inside Out)" the B Side to the single version of "Think it Over" featuring Sloman on vocals, a song that has been quoted as the "worst song ever written by the band" Which is a shame really, as I quite like it and in my opinion the band have released worse (Love Stealer springs to mind). The band apparently have said that as no-one ever listens to the B side of singles it didn't really matter if it was a good or a bad title (perhaps I was the exception as I always gave the B-side a listen, and in a lot of cases the 'flip' side' would be better, I can think of two Heep examples, 'Been Hurt' the flip side to 'Carry On' and 'Why' the Flip side to 'Easy Livin''. Both of which are far superior to the A-side)

Not being a particularly big Gary Moore fan i couldn't tell you if he is on these Demos or not.

The Babys were a British rock/pop group best known for their songs "Isn't It Time" and "Everytime I Think of You". Both songs reached #13 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart in the late 1970s.
The 1976-1978 Babys line-up consisted of vocalist/bassist John Waite, drummer Tony Brock, Keyboard player/guitarist Michael Corby, and guitarist Wally Stocker.
After Corby was sacked by Chrysalis in August 1978 a replacement was sought. The company brought in two musicians to replace the co-founder: Jonathan Cain on keyboards and Ricky Phillips to play bass. From 1979 until the final breakup in 1981 the Babys line-up consisted of vocalist Waite, drummer Brock, bassist Phillips, guitarist Stocker and keyboardist Cain.
Corby had been dismissed and the control of the name of the band was never relinquished by him, in effect making the 1979 band a breakaway group from the original contract and not entitled to use the name.
The Babys Archives states a very strong case against the name being used after Corby and Millar were sacked, the original contract clearly has Corby as a member and never lists Cain and Phillips. Corby commissioned The Babys Archives a number of years ago to correct a number of misconceptions about the origins of the group.
John Waite went on to produce a major solo hit, "Missing You", in 1984. Stocker and Brock worked with Rod Stewart and other mainstream artists including Elton John and Air Supply. Cain enjoyed major success with Journey and Phillips with Bad English.

John Sinclair is a keyboardist who has played for bands such as The Babys, Heavy Metal Kids, Savoy Brown, The Cult, but is probably best known for his time in Uriah Heep and playing for Ozzy Osbourne's band. He also is credited with styling keyboard parts for This Is Spinal Tap.

Bakerloo - The BBC Sessions 1969

A power trio similar to the latter outfit, they also incorporated some of the artier elements of pop music from that period--Dave "Clem" Clempson played solid, bluesy lead guitar, but he also doubled on harpsichord and piano as well as providing the mouth harp, while Terry Poole played bass and Keith Baker played drums.

They made all the right moves as a performing outfit, courtesy of their manager, Jim Simpson (who also handled Black Sabbath, known as Earth at the time, in those days)--he organised a U.K. tour, dubbed "Big Bear Ffolly" (which later became the title of a Bakerloo song) which had Bakerloo, Earth, Locomotive and Tea And Symphony playing throughout the country

Bakerloo was also one of the support acts on Oct. 18, 1968, the night Led Zeppelin made their debut at London's Marquee Club. Bakerloo were among the early signings to EMI's Harvest label, where they made their debut in the middle of 1969 with the single "Driving Backwards" b/w"Once Upon A Time" in July.

They followed it up that fall with their self-titled album, which gave their jazz-inflected electric blues, reminiscent in some ways of Blodwyn Pig's work, a full workout. Cut under the guidance of producer Gus Dudgeon and released in November of that year, the album was one of the harder rocking releases in the early Harvest schedule. Bakerloo were one of the more sophisticated blues-oriented power trios, and that might've been their undoing in finding an audience.

Given time, they might've been another Ten Years After, but there was barely any time to find their potential, for the band broke up in late 1969 when Clem Clempson quit to join Colosseum, which proved to be a stopping point on his way into the line-up of Humble Pie as Peter Frampton's successor, and later worked with Roger Daltrey, Tom Waits, and The Records, among other major acts. Terry Poole passed through Graham Bond's band in the early/middle-1970's, and Keith Baker later became a member of Uriah Heep. And, in my personal opinion, is also one of the better in the world, one album that i have heared hundred and hundred of times (last time this morning going to work) in twenty years from when a friend gave it to me on one tape. If you haven't and if you don't know this masterpiece, download it and enjoy!!!

First we have a solemn introduction of the LP named "in volo". What we have here it's a recited part interpreted by Vittorio Nocenzi and then by di Giacomo. The word are just immense, this words will be repeted and repeted by many of their fans around the world! As you play this album on your player you'll be sure to have bought a masterpice, and the album it's not started yet!...

Track two it's R.I.P. (Requiescant In Pace), a classic Banco song, every fan around the world knows it! It's a song that talk about how the war it's pointless and the only thing it do it's to bring sadness, pain and taking lives of men who will not see their future. This song it's divided by two principal blocks: The first one it made by a catchy rhythm with some great musical arrangements and a great singing. The solos in this first part are very weird, the guitar solo it's a bit unispired and the keyboard one have a strange sound but is kinda enjoyable. Next part it's more quiet and it have a more melodic piano playing and singing, in more typical italian "canzone" style. This part it's fantastic, the lyrics are some of the best which i've ever heard! An unforgettable song with also a fast and beautifull ending! This song usually it's played in A minor but here it's played in B minor. That's very strange, even in the oldest videos or live recording it's played in A... it's a minor fact anyway, this song it's a masterpiece anyway!!!

Than whe have "Passaggio" (passage) which is a short song, just the time to recatch some breath! What we have here it's a smoth song only played by clavinet surely by Gianni Nocenzi. The harmonies are just beautifull, you can clearly see the classical on Gianni's style, a principal quality that has distinguished Banco by many italian groups, specially Gianni by other keyboardist, or pianist in his case for the fact he only play piano and clavinet and sometimes synths inside the group. It a song which flows away without boring you, just close your eyes and relax. That's why it's called passage!

Than we have metamorfosi (metamorfosis... italian it's easy isn't it?), another trademark of banco's music. The song start heavily but not for long, infact then we have another great piano played by Gianni, fluent and classically inspired! The songs continue and Vittorio and the hammond comes in and slowly al the rest of the band. We will have some great moments in this part, all of the member give the best of their abilities. Than there is some slow parts and then di Giacomo comes in and the lyrics as always are immense. The song then close with a very very beutifull and heavy part! The hammond and the guitar will catch you and won't let you go til the song it's end!!! A great ending!!!

Now it's the time of Il giardino del Mago (the wizard s'garden), the longest song here and one of the most epic songs of Banco! It's a song which talk about a guy that searched this place for long time and than he remains trapped in this garden where everything it's different from reality. First we have a good instrumental parts with good hammond and guitar riffs. Arrangements are always great! Than a slowly part with some sad singing by di Giacomo and the lyrics are poetics and delicate completed with an atmospere cold and dark. Than the song change completly and the music will catch you and take you inside the wizard s'garden! The rhythm are brilliant and the instruments are amazing! Just wow!!! Than the song stops again and we have a slow reprise with guitar passages and a beautifull piano solo. The song as the second part of R.I.P. become more melodic and lighter, every listener will love this part. Di Giacomo it's always great, as always it's singed perfectly and the lyrics are immense. The song continue this some parts including a magnificent Hammond solo and other singed parts which talk about how there it's a place where the reality it's different, far away from cruelty of men, a dream place were everyone want to go. Than the song will close recalling the first parts, and this adventure it's end too!

The last track it's Traccia (track). It's an instrumental song, a bit short, which reminds me a lot the traditional popular italian song. There is no much to say couse it's a bit repetitive, there is some good riffs and It's a very happy song that's close this album for the best!!

Another thank you, this time to "Silverado Rare Music Blog (Original link) for this bootleg, that includes the only known (i think) audio registration of a live concert of Toe Fat. I think that this is really a good and rare Heep related bootleg, even if those are Toe Fat "mark II", with Alan Kendall instead of Ken Hensley and Brian Glascock in place of Lee Kerslake.

From "Siverado blog": Toe Fat opened for Derek & the Dominos - It's not the entire concert but it's the only live gig by Toe Fat I know . The sound is pretty good... So enjoy this rare concert!!!

With a big thank you to blog "Music Box", from where i download this bootleg (Link to original post), i can make a post with a double intention: this is an Uriah Heep related soundboard recording, for the presence of mr. Bob Daisley, but this post is, in my mind, also an hommage in memory of the Giant of rock Mr. Ronnie James Dio. I think that the world is more sad and grey from when He is dead, and in past years i love very much his voice (one of the first hard rock albums that i hear, after all Uriah Heep classics, was "Mob Rules" by Black sabbath, and i was, from the first touch, very impressed by Dio's voice).
I think that no one who loves seventies and eighties hard rock doesn't know this Man, so you know what i want to say...

Do not confuse this band with the hair metal band of the same name that appeared in the late eighties

This band only hung around for this one album but it has quality all the way through it. probably its biggest problem was how to categorize it as there are numerous different styles on offer here with the bulk of the writing being done by Farr and Sinclair who quite blatantly steals a guitar riff here and there for later use on the 'Abominog' album

I had started to write one myself when I came across this and quite frankly I couldn't have put it any better Interesting to note that this apparently has had a CD release but I couldn't find it anywhere so I have had to settle for a vinyl copy

This is truly a forgotten little gem from 1980. Like the other reviewer of this album I discovered this band because of another band member. In my case it was keyboardist John Sinclair who went on to play with Uriah Heep soon after this album. Being interested in all things Heep and the numerous bands that all the various members of Heep have played in, I came across this album in a cut-out bin back in 1982. Gary Farr, the singer here, was a veteran already, having fronted the T-Bones in the mid 60s and also had recorded a few excellent solo albums and here he brings a confidence and assurance that is nicely matched and complemented by the rest of the band. That's the thing here--this seems like a release from a band who had been around for several years and the album, carrying all the collective experience of its various members, helps create an assured and highly polished album that veritably shines. "Summer Ghosts", "Cold Sheets (Winters in New York), "Running All Night (With the Lion)".......hell EVERY single song on here is a beautifully constructed and produced piece with lots of interesting group interplay and solos. Some of the material sounds a bit like the Michael McDonald era Doobie Brothers, with Gary Farr's white soulful vocals adding a nice center for the mature and sensitively drawn vignettes the songs reveal. It's a real departure hearing Farr transformed into a rock front man, instead of the introspective singer/songwriter but a close scrutiny of the songs here shows his trademark wit still solidly intact. The context has simply altered. Uriah Heep covered the track, "Running All Night (With the Lion)" and quite frankly, this version is superior. Delivered in a slower tempo, it comes across a touch more urbane and stylish. I also noticed that Sinclair stole a repeated guitar motif from the song "Sweet Fire" for "Sell Your Soul" also from the Heep album "Abominog". Seems like he got a lot of mileage out of this forgotten release!
The absolute highlight of this already great album is the utterly magnificent mini-epic "Diana". This song has a sweeping kind of majesty to it and the lyrics, using the passing of time as a central conceit, to describe how little things change sometimes from an individual perspective, is simply beautiful. Kind of brings to mind the literary song style of Al Stewart. The band are all playing there asses off here too and it's completely inspired. It really is a song you should hear if you haven't (and most people probably haven't). This is the time to hear it too--a small label out of Las Vegas (Retrospect Records) has given this a long overdue CD release and it sounds nearly as good as the vinyl did. I would recommend this to anyone who likes melodic, stylish music a wee bit on the mature side. Like the other reviewer, I suppose this could be called AOR but it's actually in a special category all it's own. That's probably why it didn't find a larger audience on its initial release. Become one of the few, in the know people who can now be privy to a well kept little secret--Running All Night!

The Following is an extract from Steve Webb's Autobiography

I headed back to Southampton to share a flat with John Cartwright, the extraordinary talented song writer and multi-instrumentalist (He wrote most of the songs in the JRB) and we tried to figure out what to do. The phone rang and it was one Gary Farr who had heard I was free and wanted me to try out for his new band Lion and I needed some bread so John said ‘Do it.’ Gary was one of the greats from the early sixties R&B boom and with his band The T Bones was a big influence on the London scene. He had then gone on to the States and was signed to Atlantic and made a wonderfully poetic album “Addressed to the censors of love” which is changing hands for a lot of loot these days. His new outfit had John Sinclair on keyboards, Eric Dillon on drums and Steve Humphries on bass. Various guitarists had been considered, Snowy White was in for a time, but after a fitful start I was asked to join. The other players had all been in successful bands, John in The Heavy Metal Kids, Eric in Fat Mattress (Noel Redding’s band that toured with Hendrix) and Steve with Mahatma Kane a popular London mob. Gary's brother Rikki was the manager, he had put on the Isle of Wight festivals and ran a huge sound company in the U.S. When we first met he said “Webby, you remind me of Eric Santana especially when you scale up to the treble E.” Now you cant top that I thought but he did. “Lads, we’re gonna go to Los Angeles, build a studio and in six months you'll have a record deal.” And that's exactly what happened give or take a few months. We added another guitarist, the wonderful Robin Le Mesurier (now playing with French star Johnnie Halliday), signed to A&M in 1978 for a monstrous amount of money and had a great time auditioning producers at our demo studio out in Topanga Canyon. We saw Roy Thomas Baker (of Queen fame) who came out in a Rolls and a fur coat, the temperature was 30c, he listened and said, “You want stringy-poohs do you?” Gary wasn't having that. Todd Rundgren, who sat on the floor and trashed the lyrics, said if he took the job it would end up a Todd album, Gary wasn't having that. Glyn Johns (Stones etc.) who after a listen said he'd take the synth outside and chop it up first thing. Well you guessed it! Finally Ron Nevison came out, said nothing, just told us to play and recorded us using our 8 track and ropey old mixer. The result was stunning compared to our own efforts up to then and we wanted him on the case immediately. Nevison had engineered some of the Zep stuff and had huge hits in the States with The Babys and other hard rock acts. His assistant was Mike Clink and we all know Mike went on to produce Guns & Roses, I guess he learned a lot of that sound working with Ron. We worked at the Record Plant and the recording went well and the album was delivered but then the plot began to unwind and Rikki and Ron fell out for God knows what reason, who had the biggest Rolls Royce is my guess. We re-recorded the whole album again with Pete Henderson who had just won a Grammy for Supertramps “Breakfast in America” and I guess we spent A&M’s profit. What a great pile of money. The band were on a weekly advance, $200 bucks or so, so we weren’t rolling in it ourselves but the studio costs and the equipment and all the rest, about four hundred grand, no wonder at the end of it all A&M decided to drop us. We did tour with the Tubes and that was fun, but the band had lost its way and at the end of 1980 we fell apart

Finally it would appear that the band carried on without Farr, if only briefly, changing their name to The Difference a name suggested by John Sinclair and still used by Steve Webb
This early version of the band didn't leave us any studio recordings all that would seem to exist is this extremely poor video from 1980
